Welcome to the AB School of Dance! With classes ranging from 6 months to adulthood, our timetable provides a fun and positive environment that allows you or your child to develop confidence and skill. From ballet to street dance, we offer a wide range of styles so there is something for everyone.

Working towards exciting shows and BBO dance examinations, we run weekly classes at different venues and times to suit you. Not forgetting the exclusive opportunities and bonus dance experiences we run for our pupils!

OUR HISTORY

In 1976, the Annette Burley School of Dancing was established in Bilton, Hull by principal Annette Burley. The dance school expanded to branches across Hull and East Yorkshire and flourished under Annette’s vision for almost 45 years.

In 2022, after the Covid pandemic, the dance school was entrusted to four of Annette’s long term students - Amy, Elise, Elinor and Holly - and the name of the school was changed to AB School of Dance.

The dance school is entering its 50th year and is continuing to thrive, with new dance styles and locations across Hull. In 2025, we opened our brand new AB Studio on Spyvee Street, Hull, which consists of two modern, mirrored dance studios. However, we have stayed true to the roots of the school and our branch in Bilton continues to be the most popular of all!

EXAMS

We follow the BBO dance (previously known as the British Ballet Organisation) syllabus, which focuses on technique, artistry and performance skills.

Students will be given the opportunity to take exams every two years if the teachers believe they are ready in time for the examination sessions. It is not mandatory for students to take the exams but we strongly recommend and encourage examinations as they are beneficial to the pupils for many reasons including improving confidence, technique, gaining rewards for their hard work, recognising their progress and giving them the qualifications to continue into the professional industry if they wish to do so. The higher levels of the examinations also carry UCAS points which is extremely beneficial for students taking GCSEs and A Levels.

The fees for the exams are set by BBO dance, which will be alongside teaching costs, room hire and admin costs. If a pupil is put forward for an exam, the costs, dates and any other information will be distributed as far in advance as possible.

All pupils take part in our Summer and Christmas dance shows. Tickets to watch the shows are available to purchase for parents, family and friends.

For our larger scale shows, costumes are selected and ordered by the school and invoices are distributed to parents/guardians. These costumes are then kept by the students.

Costs, dates and any other information will be communicated around showtime each year.

SHOWS

All pupils take part in our dance shows which are usually held at Middleton Hall. Tickets to watch the show are available to purchase for parents, family and friends.
